The Media are America’s Biggest Drama Queens



In another class, we were assigned an essay based on a clip from The Daily Show and I thought it was relevant to the blog and how the media sustain the “agenda-setting” theory. In this clip linked below, Jon Stewart criticized the media for sensationalizing urban myths instead of focusing on more important issues like gun violence. Last December the media claimed that a new game was running rampant among our nation’s youth: the “Knockout Game,” where teens approach strangers on the street and punch them in the face. While some claimed this game has existed since 1994, others think that it is a publicity stunt. Stewart mocked the media’s dramatic response to the problem and mentioned that they also overreacted to flash mobs, car surfing and biting trends in the past.
